An eventfull couple of days

Recommended Posts

Well its been an eventful couple of days, more like a week or so realy.

I bought a HW80 some years ago and have had very happy hunting times with it.

I decided to treat myself to a new scope and got a Hawke Tactical 4.5-14x42, then new mounts - DM70 Sportsmatch dampa mounts.

All fitted and off to the range, very happy indeed, then I had a go on a few PCP rifles that some guys were shooting with and was pretty much hooked on the easy accuracy, especially as I was getting the same groupings with my HW80 as they were minus the recoil!

On the way from the range I popped in to the onsite gunshop to see what they had in - plenty of PCP rifles, So I posed the "part exchange?" question, "yes, we will have a look at your gun, check it on the chrono and take it from there". "No problems at all, Ill go and get it".

The guy was not a happy bunny when he came out of the back room, "its running at 13ftlbs sir!"

Lots of questions about have you been 'fettling with it?' its an illegal weapon etc and bang goes my part exchange option.

I was honestly quiet shocked, the HW80 was a 1997 rifle from Hull Cartridge and no modifications what soever, Another chrono with different pellets gave a result of 14ftlbs and comments of dieseling smell, now I dont and never had put lube on my slugs or in the barrel etc.

Although one of the guys in the shop had turned from a nice easy going and helpful person to a standoffish irritate man, the other guy gave me the gun back and suggested - gunshop-fix- you dont want to get caught with that etc.

So I was deflated and a bit nervous on the drive home as I didnt want to get pulled over for speeding or anything at all!

The very next morning I went to the local gunshop and told them what had happended, the gunsmith litteraly didnt want to physically touch the rifle at 1st! but once the legal technicalities had been explained, like take the spring out and bring it back for PX etc things warmed up nicely, with me leaving the HW80 with the shop and me getting an Air Arms s410 and AA silencer and new scope mounts for a very good deal indeed.

So I have now joined the ranks of PCP powered hunters and do feel a little like I have lost a bit of my soul, as I miss the feel of the recoil in my old HW but do enjoy the silence and no-recoil of my new gun.

Picture attached even though its just the same gun as many others, this one is mine.post-50435-12767873556_thumb.jpg

I still have my very 1st gun from when I was a lad, A Meteor .177, Its all a bit loose in the stock now and no amount of tightening the screws helps, I guess it may be time to give it some TLC as its had a hard life.

Ah, a project is what I now have with my little Meteor MK5, NH56483, made some time from 1979 onwards, and I bought it 2nd hand many years ago.

Its already had a bit of extra colour added to the stock, so its no longer original and I wouldnt feel bad about a complete bare wood refinish, so thats job number 1.

When I was a bit younger I had also shortened the barrel a little and removed the original blue, now I cant make the barrel longer but I can reblue it.

The cylinder blue isnt too bad, its almost like black paint? perhaps they did paint them, or someone else has, not me for sure.

The stocks a bit loose so Im looking about for some kind of brass insert that can be put in the holes to take out the slop, Ill need a cover that fits over the end of the cylinder, It did have a plastic one, I remember it cracking and falling off!

The barrel hinge needs tightening as its a little loose as well.

I bet it needs the spring out and new seals and repack with grease.

So a service, new seals, refinish stock and possible full reblue and a few little parts...something for the winter me thinks :)

Welcome to the forum, as said its a good place

You were lucky to get the HW back from the guy at the shop. I believe they are supposed to confiscate them if over the limit

You will bag up with the AA buddy no recoil = no worries

How you filling her, pump? And dont forget to give her a name; just to wind Buster up :tongue2::laugh:
